You may have seen the Defeat Diabetes diet and program mentioned somewhere in Australia – there have been a few television slots and newspaper/outlets discussing it.
Introduced to the market early 2021, the team from Defeat Diabetes began by offering app-based diet resources (and now available on web and tablet) to help people with type 2 diabetes, prediabetes and people with metabolic health issues to improve their health – it’s great to see that happening more in Australia!
Here at DMP, our expert nutrition team have been supporting people with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes around the globe since 2015, via our online meal planning and nutrition service.
What is Defeat Diabetes Diet About?
The Defeat Diabetes diet focuses on a low carbohydrate eating plan.
There is an abundance of scientific research available now that shows low carb diets are one of the most effective ways for people with type 2 diabetes to achieve and maintain glucose control, lower medication needs and even put diabetes into remission.
Since 2015, the DMP Team have been encouraging a low carbohydrate eating plan for people with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, even when the diet was seen as highly controversial. The research was always there, it was just buried. Now it’s more readily available, and continues to grow.
DMPs Founder, Dr Jedha, is Australian but our first site was at DiabetesMealPlans.com, with many DMP customers originally coming from other countries (US, UK, Canada, Asia) – where they have been a bit more open to low carb diets. DMP AU was launched in 2019.
It’s great to see that a low carb diet is now more accepted, acknowledged and is gaining some momentum here in Australia – it is a very good way to get results!
Defeat Diabetes App
Defeat Diabetes is an app-based dietary resource, which is great if you love your phone. They did later move to provide their service on web and tablet as well.
Here at DMP we offer a digital service, which is accessible across all devices – desktop computer, mobile phone, tablet or laptop. We don’t have an app in the app store, but we do have instructions for our members on how to save our app to their phones.
Defeat Diabetes has not conducted any proven research of their own app. The ‘scientifically-proven’ statements on their website means they draw from the body of research available – and as stated above, there is a lot of research about low carb diets out there today.
We have also been drawing from this large body of research for many years. However, as an extension of almost a decade of research and seeing our members achieve amazing results from our online service, in 2021-2022, Dr Jedha, conducted the first randomised controlled trial of a web-based low carbohydrate nutrition program, which was shown to be very successful. Results of this Australian study (the first of it’s kind in Australia and the world) will be available soon!
Defeat Diabetes Program
Defeat Diabetes isn’t really a program as such, but more of a service like we offer here at DMP.
The Defeat Diabetes app provides 13 lessons, articles, masterclasses, 250 recipes and meal plans.
Inside DMPs members-only site, members can access weekly meal plans, 1500+ recipes, a huge library of diabetes-specific food and health articles, food masterclass, and much more.
Results of Defeat Diabetes
Without a doubt, we know a low carb diet works to get results – that’s why we’ve been encouraging it since 2015. Therefore, Defeat Diabetes are certainly helping people and that’s a fantastic thing!
However, some of the statements made by Defeat Diabetes about their program and app results could be elaborated.
For example, on a channel 7 advertorial, they stated a survey showed 52% of participants had put their diabetes into remission. This has also been mentioned on their Facebook page and places on their website.
However, on their website, it also states 63% of members put their diabetes in remission.
So the first question is, which is it? 52 or 63? And how many people is this survey from? 10? 500? It would be good to have a few more particulars, including the Defeat Diabetes definition of diabetes remission.
Diabetes Australia and other organisations around the globe define ‘Diabetes Remission’ as HbA1c <6.5% for at least 3 months without glucose-lowering medication. Some studies define it as maintaining a HbA1c <6.5% with or without oral medication.
