Meet Don

I have recently retired after 40 years in the Hospitality industry. After many years of long hours, which included both day and night shifts, retirement has given me the opportunity to start looking after myself for a change.

I had been a keen sportsman growing up, playing tennis, cricket and soccer regularly.

After I completed my apprenticeship in hospitality the industry demanded one’s full commitment and consequently my sporting activities ended when I was in my early 20’s. Since then I have struggled to keep to a well balanced eating habit and to remain physically active. This has resulted in the issues I am experiencing now.

What made you decide to join as a DMP member?

I decided to join DMP because it what was I was looking for, a program which could help me get back on track before my condition deteriorated.

I had been a borderline diabetic for years and could never really get any better. I always seemed to be hovering on the edge no matter what I tried. The doctors always told me that I was controlling my sugar levels, but I didn’t want to continue controlling it – I wanted to reverse it.

I saw that DMP was able to provide plenty of information, recipes, and most importantly, support and feedback. The podcasts are full of science-based facts and provide extra resources for members, so you can make informed decisions without the need to filter out the misinformation found in other areas such as social media and the internet.

What kind of diet were you eating before joining?

I tried the CSIRO low carb diet, but found this too confusing and cumbersome for me. I tried others that were supposed to reduce belly fat but did not produce any significant results. I achieved moderate success with a fasting diet which also included calorie counting, but found it difficult to take on permanently.

What things have you changed?

My eating habits have changed and have found the recipes really great. If I happen to see a recipe that I like in another book or magazine I always look at the nutritional numbers. Carbs, fats, fibre etc. If they don’t show them, I cast those recipes aside.

I have got so used to looking up the numbers on anything I buy in the shops. I am weaning myself off the artificial sweeteners and learning what food types to avoid  and so on. I really like the guilt free biscuits and cheesecake recipes, which show that you can still have plenty of treats to eat.

Your program has been really good for me and I can see the results which has been so beneficial.

Don’s results, in 4 months!

Don has been a VIP Member and here’s what he says:

I was very pleased with my latest A1c result which showed 5.8, down from 6.4. This is the lowest my A1c has been in years. I am looking to reduce this level down to 5.3 or so.

I had previously been on a weight plateau but now I have lost weight as well, 78kg to 73kg. My waistline has reduced from 96cm to 92cm. I am very pleased about my waistline reduction, I used to wear 36 inch pants, now I wear 32 inch – and still more to go!

My fasting blood sugar levels have been very stable over the last 2 weeks – around the mid 5’s. These always showed in the 6’s before. I am also very pleased with my postprandial average from your health log, which shows 6.1. My latest blood test also revealed that my triglyceride level dropped from 2.6 to 1.0.

Overall I am really pleased with the progress so far, which has only been since January till April.

In summary, Don’s results in 4 months are as follows:

  • HbA1c reduction of 0.6%
  • Weight loss 5kg
  • Triglyceride reduction of 1.6 mmol
  • Waist circumference 5cm reduction
  • Great postprandial numbers!

How different is your life now to before?

I feel there is a huge difference now. I sleep much better. I definitely have more energy, so much so that I play 18 holes of golf, a session of pilates and a morning of pickle-ball every week.

Plus, I walk every day, at least 3 to 4 km during the day and then 1km immediately after dinner.

I have adopted this new lifestyle and aim to improve with more weight loss, reduce A1C and come off my cholesterol and blood pressure meds entirely.

Can you describe the type of support you receive as a member?

As a VIP Member, I get great feedback on my results with full explanation of the results with suggestions and recommendations on possible courses of action to take. I know that if I ask a question it will get responded to. My blood results were explained in depth to me, far more than I have ever received before.

What would be your best advice to others?

Don’t delay in getting started. I found this program so good for myself as it showed immediate improvement in results. My blood glucose level came down, my weight dropped, my waistline reduced, my triglycerides down the lowest it’s ever been. This was achieved by sticking to the program, following DMPs advice, being disciplined and persistent.

Don’t get discouraged, I know I did at one stage when I wondered why my blood fasting levels weren’t coming down and they explained that I should give it a bit more time as my body was still adjusting to the changes. And so it did, and now they are stable as well. So get to it, and stick with it and you will achieve the results you want.
